Q&A - July 15, 2016

New improvements are showing up in downtown Okmulgee nearly every day. The Okmulgee Main Street office has relocated to the southeast corner of 6th Street and Grand Avenue. It is now in the beautifully renovated first floor of the historic Kennedy Building. Local artist, Carmen Taylor, has completed her vibrant mural on the east-facing upper wall of the Sneed Building.

This iconic tribute to Okmulgee now greets downtown visitors as they cross the railroad tracks. And most recently, Morty’s Restaurant/Café on Morton Avenue (next to 102 Ristorante) is now open for business. This new family-friendly eatery promises to attract even more people to our town center.

A local group of volunteers, at the center of much of the resurgence in our downtown, is Okmulgee Main Street. Please allow me to tell you about their upcoming annual fundraising event.

Q: What is the Big Brain Trivia Night?

I can really only describe this fun and quirky event as 25 costumed teams of Okmulgee’s self-proclaimed “Big Brains” competing to outsmart one another by answering trivia questions, while generously helping to create a brighter future for our community! Held for the first time last year, the Big Brain Trivia Night is back and more popular than ever. Saturday, August 13, is when it will all happen at the OSUIT State Room and tables are filling up fast!

Teams of brainy competitors and community-minded event sponsors are currently being sought by Okmulgee Main Street Board Members and other volunteers. Apparently, big brains take up a lot of room, so space will be limited. I’m told that 16 teams have already been confirmed, leaving only 9 more tables available. The acceptance of entry forms must cease when all the tables are filled. These last few tables are expected to fill up fast because of last year’s success, so please don’t delay in getting your entry form turned in.

An ideal Big Brain Trivia Team is made up of no more than eight smart people, or at least one smart person with seven of his/her less-intellectual friends. And remember, nothing unifies a team better than a distinct uniform. Therefore, all teams are encouraged to dress up and have fun!

The main competition will consist of six challenging rounds of trivia questions plus an auditory bonus round. To ensure a level playing field, trivia round categories will not be disclosed prior to the event. Teams will compete not only for the highly coveted, ultimate trivia championship trophy but also for the Best Table Decoration recognition. This is a competition among the teams to see which team can accumulate the most votes and money over the course of the evening.

Event Sponsors will have the choice to be Round or Program Sponsors. There will also be a silent auction. Table/team tickets cost $320 and will cover drinks and heavy hors d’oeuvres. A cash bar will also be available. All proceeds will assist the efforts of Okmulgee Main Street, and we would like to thank everyone for their kind support.
